Juno Task- Story Board, Props, group planning skills.

In today's lesson we started the process of recreating the opening sequence to the film Juno (shown below). Here is the story board my group (Rory and Charlotte) created. We used stick people to represent the character in the scene and we used small boxes with arrows to represent the transitions between clips.

We also looked at what props we needed such as a guitar and red jumper. We managed to get the red jumper but we didn't manage to get a guitar. We used a tripod and a camera for the filming process.

Mainstream Vs Independent

This is a PowerPoint comparing the differences between a mainstream film (Love Actually) and an independent film (Submarine).

Evaluation of film pitch

We got an average mark of 42.06 out of 70. Most our feedback said that we didn't market the film very well, in our group we didn't talk about marketing very much. Next time we will definitely talk about marketing as we have realized it plays a big part in media. We were also told that some of the actors we choose didn't suit the film. Scarlet Johanson is said to represent a middle aged woman however she looks too young for the role. Our classmates liked our film title and our story.

This is our evaluation that had the lowest result.

This is our evaluation that has the highest result.

Genre Task 3- Demonstrate Understanding of genre with film pitch.

We were set the task of creating a film pitch for a film we created after being given the genre 'Family Drama' and the target audience 'Middle Aged Housewives'.

Blank Sheet

This is our presentation.

Blank sheet pitch from oliverloom5

This is my Script.

Slide One -You’re lonely. You’ve had a horrible past. You want things to start going right for you.You want a fresh start. You need a blank page.

Slide Two-*Title*

Slide Three -We have a vision of creating a family drama for middle aged house wives. We wanted something drastic, hard-hitting.We wanted a story that stood a-side from the rest of its genre. In today’s day and age it’s almost impossible to create a film which is completely original, however with a compelling story and fantastic relatable characters, there is no reason why our film won’t stand out.We have been in contact with the Weeknd who are interested in creating a full sound track for a film after their hit ‘Earned it’ from 50 shades of grey.

Slide Four- *Sophie*

Slide Five- Beside me you can see a brief outline of our opening scene. We want to start the film with beautiful scenery, we’ve found a nice place down in Cornwall (Bude) where this part could be filmed. But there is a woman standing at the top of the cliff and she is reminiscing about her past. There will be flashbacks to her arguing with her now ex-husband whilst she is pregnant, she is eventually pushed down the stairs and evidently loses her baby This is when the title of the film will appear and the story will begin.

Slide Six*Aaron*

Slide Seven*Aaron*

Slide Eight*Sophie*

Slide Nine- Any questions at all?

Slide Ten- Okay, thank you for your time, we look forward to hearing from you.

Institution

In our Institution lesson we looked at how films get into the cinema, what a distributor is and does, the main film going audience, how cinemas make all there money, and who the big 6 are.

How do films get into cinema?
After a discussion with our teacher we found out that there is a film calendar (below) where different films are released at different times. If an independent film wants to get into cinema they are better off trying during September time as there is less competition with mainstream films. Independent films pay to get into cinemas usually. Mainstream films like James Bond movies etc. usually have cinemas come to them wanted to screen there film.

In September there isn't many big films released.
October is Emmy contenders.
Run up to Christmas there are big blockbuster films (Spectre, Hunger Games, Star Wars).
Summer there are mainly children's films.

What does a Distributor do?
A distributor makes deals with people who want to show a film in a cinema.

How do Cinemas make there money?
Cinemas mostly make there money through the snacks they sell and occasionally from independent films being screened. They people who run the cinema see it as though if they have the best films then they will sell more snacks to customers.

Who are the big 6?
The big six are the biggest and film producers. They are:
-Warner Brothers
-20th Century Fox
-Universal
-Disney
-Paramount
-Sony

There are also mini majors such as:
-Lionsgate
-MGM

Here is the logo for a film studio that i made using adobe fireworks. I chose to keep it simple as it still looks good and catches the eye.

Film Language (Camera, Editing, sound and mes en scene) Shot analysis.

In our film language lesson we looked at different aspects if films and learned acronyms for some of the topics. The topics and acronyms are listed below.

Camera:
-Frame-Extreme Close up (ECU), Close up (CU), Mid Shot (MS), Medium Long Shot (MLS), Wide Shot/Extreme Long Shot (ELS), Long Shot (LS).
-Angle -Worms eye view (looking up), Level View, Birds eye view (from above)
-Movements (Pan r-l, Tilt u-d, Tracking shot, steadicam, handheld)

Mise En Scene:
-Costume
-Lighting
-Actors
-Makeup
-Props
-Setting

Editing:
-Transitions
-Order of Narrative
-Pace
-Special Effects

Sound:
-Dialogue (what? How?)
-Music (Parallel / Contrapuntal)
-diegetic sound (real sounds)/  Non diegetic (music, voice over, narration)

My class have been set the task to analyse the opening scene of the film 'Boyz in da hood' using our newly acquired film language.

The opening scene of 'Boyz in da hood' includes some good features which have sound, Camera, editing and Mise en Scene. As the scene opens you can hear the sound of shooting taking place, this part is effective as the audience has to imagine what is happening in the scene. We could tell that the film was going to be in a rough setting due to the amount of swearing and threats. From the sound in the this clip we can also see that a key theme throughout this film will be racism. The teacher is white and she is very well spoken and educated, where as the black people in the scene all cause trouble by swearing and using slang. The film opening uses Mise on Scene, the kids, who are black, are dressed in nice clothes, however when there are older black characters, late teenagers, they look very scruffy and thug like, this is to portray what the kids will turn into later in the film. In the classroom the camera is mainly a medium long shots, however there are also close ups to show the characters expressions. The camera uses a long shot whilst the child is walking home from school, this is to show his whole body and it also shows the boy being beaten up in the background. At the end of the scene there is some great editing to transition two scenes. As the boy is walking home his mum is on the phone talking to his teacher, the scene cuts between the boy walking and the phone call, however you can hear the conversation at all times. When the woman hangs up the phone the boy walks through the door and arrives home, and the next scene begins.

Representation

In our Representation lesson we learned about Stereotypes and where they come from. We also learned about how the media represents people in different ways. There were a lot of debates in the class about their opinions on different examples such as magazine covers and the way some celebrities are portrayed in the media. Here are some of the key words we came across in the lesson, there definitions.

Representation: The way that which people, events and ideas are presented to the audience.

Stereotype: A stereotype is a 'Visual Short-Cut' they are used so much that people assume that its normal or true.

Archetype: The 'Ultimate' stereotype. For example a french man wearing a striped top, holding a baguette whilst drinking red wine.

Countertype: A representation that challenges original stereotypes.

Gatekeeper: A media gate keeper is someone involved in allowing or disallowing something to be seen by an audience.

We were set the task to watch the beginning of a film and write about the representation that has been used. I have chosen to analyse the representation of this clip from the movie "The Shawshank Redemption".

In this clip there are several representations that are being showed. The film is about prison life and in this clip the prison itself is an archetype. It is a towering building, frightening to look at, made to look very dull, dark and miserable. Most the characters in the scene are stereotypical prisoners, they all wear the same uniform and all look ugly, dirty and grim. The character on the coach 'Andy' is a countertype to these prisoners, he seems to be handsome and intelligent looking. This could have been the writers way of saying that not all prisons are bad people. This clip shows a stereotypical prison, dark and gloomy.

Audience- Uses and Grats and how you consume films.

In today's lesson we have looked at Audience.

Uses and Gratification (Pleasure)

Personal Identification

Information
Entertainment
Social Interaction

I use films for many different reasons. The main reason why i watch films is for entertainment, they help me to relax and take my mind off of school. I also watch documentaries to for information, i watched WW2 documentaries last year to assist me in my exams. I have also watched films because my friends have seen them and talked about them, an example of this is the BBC drama 'Doctor Foster' the program isn't something i would normally be interested in but i watched it to join in with the conversations.

Film and you

What do you mean when we use the word...

Film: I believe that the word film is associated with any type of clip.

Movie: I believe that the word movie is associated with any type of clip where there is a plot.

Cinema: I believe the word cinema means a place where films/movies are showed.

What are your top ten films and what do you think they have in common?

1. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

2. Mad Max: Fury Road
3. The Dark Night
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Point Break
6. Forrest Gump
7. The Wolf Of Wall Street
8. Now You See Me
9.  Gone Girl
10. Grown Ups

Most of my films are comedies and i also like lots of action films. The two genres aren't really in the same film, but i guess it is clear that is what i enjoy most. I also like dramatic films, such as Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption.

How do you find out about a film?

I mostly find out about films through advertising however i do often look up top rated films that perhaps had been missed or would appeal to me but not my necessarily get the same amount if advertising.

What makes you want to see a feel?

I like to be surprised about a films quality when i watch it however it has been advertised well and has a clear plot then i feel inclined to watch it. I also want to watch a film if all my friends have seen it so we can all talk about it.

How do you know what to expect from a film?

I usually know what to expect from a film usually from reviews, ratings and my friends opinions. You also guess what to expect from a film by looking at the trailer and posters and guessing the genre using hints from the semiotics.

What are you paying for when you buy a cinema ticket/ rent a DVD?

When you buy a cinema ticket or DVD you are paying for the making of that film. Every film that is made looses money before it makes it. When you buy a Cinema ticket or DVD you're paying for the actors, the special effects, the advertising and everything else the producing company had to shell money out for.

Where do you watch films?

I mostly watch films when I'm in bed, I don't have much time during the day to watch a film but on an evening after a hard day it is always nice to find something on Netflix and enjoy it.

Do you think that there are differences between watching a film in a cinema and watching it at home on DVD? If you think there are, then what are they?

The main difference to watching a DVD at home and going to the cinema in most cases is the quality of viewing. Not everyone has the opportunity to watch films in High Definition with outstanding sound but you can at the cinema. However the problem is the price for a cinema ticket is forever rising and a more varied chose of films are forever becoming available at home, and the home cinema market is becoming extremely popular. You cant go to the cinema in your pajamas.

Are there some films that you have to see at the cinema or doesn't it matter?

I believe that when you go to the cinema to see a film it makes it quite special and some times you want that something extra when a big film is being released for example 'Jurassic World'. I believe that some other film such as 'Gravity' are also good to see in the Cinema as the screen is so big it makes you feel like a part of the action.

What do you understand about the word 'Industry'?
An Industry is a collective of organisations who are making money out of something on a large scale.

How many industry's can you name?

Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Sony, Paramount, Universal, Disney, MGM, Dream Works, Lionsgate.

Know how to apply Barthes narrative theory

In today's lesson we looked at narrative in film openings. We looked at the theorists Barthes, Levi-Straves, Todorov and Propp and there there theories which are listed below. This post shows the notes i took in this lesson.

Barthes- Codes (action, Symbolism, enigma).

Levi Strauss- Binary, oppositions(such as male and female, good vs evil etc)

After studying hundreds of myths and legends, Levi Strauss observed that we make sense of the world through binary opposites. He observed all narratives are organised around the conflict between such binary oppositions.

Todorov- Structure (Equilibrium, Disruption, Realization, Restored order, Equilibrium again).

Propp- Character types

Vladimir Propp studied Russian folk and fairy-tails, he drew the conclusion that all narratives had a similar structure. He came to a conclusion that there was eight types of characters.
1. The Hero
2. The Villain
3. The Donor
4. The Dispatcher
5. The False Hero
5. The Helper
7. The Princess
8. Her Father

We looked at a short films made by Pixar and studied there structure and characters looking out for Todorov's and Propps theories. We then looked at the opening scene of the film 'The Pristeige' and looked out for narrative features.

In this short story there are structural features which fit to Todorov's theory. The film starts with equilibrium with the baby sitting watching over the baby and everything is normal. Then there are several disruptions to the equilibrium, this is where the baby goes missing, starts floating around and sets himself on fire. The restored order part to the story is when the baby sitter puts the baby in the bath to solve her problem. There isn't a return to equilibrium in this clip however we assume that everything goes back to normal.

In the opening to this film there are several features from Barthes theory about Codes in film openings, these include symbols, action and enigma. The first symbol used in this opening scene are the Magicians Top Hats on the floor of what looks like a grave yard, this could mean that the film is going to be about Magicians and also have some link to death. The action of a man drowning portrays that people will die in this film. At the end of this scene the audience is left with many enigmas. These enigmas include thoughts such as; 'Who put the tank there?', 'Who was the man from the audience?' 'Was he actually a part of the trick?'.

In this short film there are several structural features that fit with Todorov's theory. At the beginning of the film the birds are just sitting on the Line in harmony, this is the equilibrium stage. The Disruption comes when a giant bird comes and also sits on the line and the line is bent down like a sling shot to the ground. The realization takes place when the birds realize how close they are to the floor. The bird lets go of the the line which could be classed as the restored order part of the film as it gets the birds out of the position they were in. However when the birds come back down from being thrown into the air they no longer have any feathers. Everything then goes back to normal again which is the return to the equilibrium, the only problem is the birds have no feathers, but that might have served them right for being so rude to the big bird earlier on in the film.

Editing Task - How to use premiere

In my editing lessons I created a short music video and a James Bond movie trailer in order to develop some editing skills and to familiarize myself with the 'Adobe Premiere' software. This post shows my edited video's and an evaluation of them.

Olly's Edit Practice

In this clip I mainly used the razor tool to cut up clips and to make them match with the beats in the music. This worked well until i put some of the transitions in, although they didn't work as well with the song i still used the transitions in the piece to show that i knew how to use them. Used some editing features such as the blur in the 'people in the city' clip and the wavy line at the end in the bird-eye shot of the city. My favorite part of this piece is the transition from where the tiger is dancing to the car with the shark and the tiger in. It worked well because the sliding transition moved along with the long brass note in the music.

Bond Editing Practice

I wasn't overly happy with this piece as a whole however i did manage to use some more features that i didn't use in the last one, for example the black and white edited part in the chair scene and the faint blur in the scene where James Bond jumps onto the truck. The sliding doors transition at the end of the action pact section in the second half of the video didn't work as well as the last video due to some random blackness in the scene, i have now worked out that it was because i placed the the transition in before the clip it goes into. It is mistakes like this that will improve my editing ability. The music worked good with the video however the way i presented it wasn't great, it was meant to die down in the middle to create suspense but it didn't work, this is something i need to work at.

I feel that after these experiments i am more confident with adobe premiere than before. I also found out that i prefer it in a windows computer to a mac as i see it as better organised and easier to use.

Genre task 2- Openin apply DISTINCT

In today's lesson we looked at the opening scenes of three films and tried to analyse them. We were then set the task to analyse three openings to films we had selected ourselves. Below are my notes from class and the analysis of three films. These are shown in this post.

Harry Brown

In the opening scene to this film we can see that the genre of the film is a hybrid between teen, horror and action. The scene shows a group of teens taking drugs and then cuts to a scene of two teens riding a moped and eventually killing a woman. The beginning of the scene is set in a dark ally, the darkness helps the audience connote that the film is which dark. The scene then cuts to a housing block where there is graffiti on the walls which symbolizes negativity. The scene is extremely gloomy even when the characters are outside, this shows helps display how the film is part horror. One of the main icons of the clip is the gun which symbolizes how the film is going to be action packed. Other icons such as the drugs and the graffiti display that the nature of the film is quite grimy and could help to show how the teens are bad characters. The clip is filmed from a POV camera which makes the audience feel as if they are actually there which makes the clip seem even more frightening.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

In the opening to this film we can see that this film is a hybrid between Sci-Fi and Comedy. The scene shows a man walking/dancing around what seems to be a space cave. The cave seems quite dark and gloomy however it is brightened by the sound of the cheerful 70's tune being played in the background of the clip, the song takes away from the serious look of the cave making the film seem comedic. There are a few icons in the clip, the first being the small alien rats running around inside the cave displaying that the film is Sci-Fi, the rocket space boots also display that this film comes from out of space as his technology is advanced. Another example of his advanced technological equipment would be his ball of light, which could represent that this character is good and not bad. The character in the scene is instantly likable, we see him dancing and singing into a space rat as if its  microphone, these features also add comedy to scene emphasizing that the film is a comedy. The text at the in the scene is very bright and bold, it is also yellow which could represent happiness as comedies are designed to make people happy.

What Lies Beneath

In the opening scene to this film we can instantly tell that it is a horror film. In this scene we see and middle ages women wondering around her house terrified of strange events which are happening around her. The setting of the scene is in this woman's house this makes the scene scary as people usually feel safe when they are in there homes. The theme of the scene is created by the music which creates wild tension but builds into an anti-climax. The main icon in this scene is the writing on the mirror which appears as if by magic in the bathroom, it makes the audience scared as we know there is some kind of spirit or force among her in the house.

Point Break

In the opening scene to this film we can tell that the genre of the film is going to be an action, crime film. The setting of the film is at an FBI training facility displaying the film will be crime based. The theme is developed by the triumphant music in the background of the scene which sounds as if the film will have a heroic plot. There are icons such as the gun showing that the film could be violent, there is also a man surfing, which shows that the film could have something to do with surfing, but both icons display that the film is going to be action packed. The scene shows a likable handsome character, who displays lots of skill, we can tell from this that the story is going to be a good vs evil kind of film from this.

The Dark Knight

In the opening scene to this film we can see that this film will be filled with crime, we cant however see that the film is a superhero movie. The setting of this opening scene is in a bank, which gets robbed and shows that the film is crime based. There are several icons in this scene such as the guns which give away that there will be a lot of action in this film. The people being killed in this scene are also an icon which correlates to the brutality of the film and also how there is action in the film.

Sin City

In this film opening we can tell that the film is a of the genre's Crime and Thriller. In this film opening there is a man and a woman standing on a balcony talking, the man wins over her heart with his words and then kills her. The scene is in black and white which could suggest that the film is set in the 50's, the only colour that shows is the red dress on the women and her red lipstick. The colour red is the only colour possibly because there is love in the film, or it represents the blood that will be shed in the film. The main icon in the film is the gun which shows that the film is crime based and possibly suggests there will be action in the film.

Semiotics/Image analysis

In today's lesson my class looked at semiotics. We talked about how there are hints in film posters which show what the film is possibly about, what a character is like and more. As an example we looked at a glee poster and noted the semiotics that had been used. I was amazed by the amount of semiotics that had been used in this one poster. To reflect on this lesson we have been set the task to analyse a film poster, I have chosen a poster from the film 300 as I have never seen it before.

In this post i will be looking at this film poster and the semiotics used within it.

In this poster there are two groups of soldiers fighting, this could suggest that the film is about war. Around the screen there are many spots of blood splattered onto the poster, this could represent that the film is action related and gory. There are also people falling off a cliff, they have been pushed by what look like Romans, the characters which are pushing are the only characters with colour on them suggesting that the film is primarily about them.

The colours of the piece contrast with each other, the background is mostly dark and the writing is a light shade of red, this is to make the words stand out more, especially the title of the film. The dark background could connote that the film is quite gloomy. The darkness derives from where the cliff eclipses the light, this could be a metaphor for a powerful army which nothing can get through, not even light. The light around the cliff contrasted with the darkness of the cliff could represent how the film is about a conflict between good and evil.

The title '300' is bigger than all the other words on the page and it a different shade of red to the other writing, this makes it stand out. The title also looks like it has been smeared onto the poster by blood further suggesting that the film is quite gory and possibly suggests that the genre is action. Lots of the words on this page are written in red which could suggest that blood is shed in this film.

This poster is successful at displaying the films genre and at revealing some themes of the film using different semiotics

Genre Task 1- Semiotics image task

In this genre task we made our own film titles which showed different genres.

Teen

In the following three photographs we tried to simulate the poster for a teen movie. We did this by using three teen actors displaying a love triangle in a school setting. The fact there are teens in the photo portray to the viewer that the film is of a teen genre. We did not show the image of the school very well however if it was showed better it would better display to the audience that the genre of the film is 'teen'.

 Drama

In these photos we show a close up of a character who is pulling a serious face. His serious face displays to the audience that this is a dramatic film.

 Seasonal

In this picture there is a grandfather and his daughter putting declarations on a Christmas tree. We can tell that the picture is seasonal as there is a Christmas tree and fairy lights in the photograph which correlate with the season of winter.

Comedy

In these snapshots we can see a person falling/slipping on a banana. I have used the prop of a banana as it is often associated with Comedy. We also used the idea of someone falling over as clumsy accidents make people laugh.

 Family

In this photo there is a couple with lots of children around. The photograph doesn't really work with the set genre of 'Family'. It looks like more of a 'Comedy' about a couple with too many children as they cant all fit under the umbrella.

Forrest Gump Opening Scene Genre Task

This is my first Genre Task.

In the clip there is a feather floating around in the sky above a city, it floats past all the houses, past a car and lands by the foot of the main character who picks the feather up and puts it in his bag. The music is quite soft, the main instrument used is a piano, the piano is quite an innocent instrument this could be used to represent the main character in this film. The character appears to be a middle aged man in a white jack. It is possible he is wearing a white jacket to symbolize that he is pure and the leading character of the film. The genre of the film is probably a drama or romance, the music gives reference to this because it is really subtle and gentle. This opening is quite difficult to categorize in terms of genre because there aren't any major hints apart from the music. Whatever the genre is, the narrative is going to be emotional as it is personified in the music.
