This is our completed final film.
Welcome to Oliver Loom's AS media blog. This is where you can find all of the tasks i have completed between September 2015 and January 2016 for my AS Media Course Work.
Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
This is my first evaluation question. It talks about conventions and where they appear or are adapted in my film opening. I have discovered that slide share is limiting as it doesn't show the music clips which are incorporated into the slideshow. The music are shown below.
Question 2- How does our Media Product represent particular social groups?
This presentation was mean to be completed on Emaze however the theme was not allowed to be changed so we had to use powerpoint to create this presentation and upload it to slidehare for it to appear on the blog. This presentation addresses the question "How does our Media Product represent particular social groups?".
Question 7 from Joe Kiff
Question 3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
This post is an evaluation of the question "What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?". One thing we didn't consider which makes our product unrealistic is that the budget wouldn't be very big or accurate if we only had one production company (Milkshake Films) which wasn't very big anyway.
Question 4- Who would be the audience for your media product?
In this 'Prezi' the question "Who would be the audience for your media product?" is addressed.
Our audience is men between the age of 12 and 24. Our secondary audience is women who are assiciated with the men. The film isn't just about football there are a lot of elements which are more dramatic such as the cancer story which would appeal more to a multi-sex category. A film we possibly should have looked at is 'Bend it like Beckham' which appeals to a female audience but is about football.

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?
Below is a post which evaluates the question "How did you attract/address your audience?".
To attract the audience I created an online survey for people to fill out. I added in the film at the top of the survey so people could watch it then fill out the survey. This is the top of the survey showing the opening sequence added in for people to view.

This was the first question on the survey. The firstquestion that we asked was 'How old are you?' 17 people answered the survey and all of them answered this survey. We made sure that all of the people who we got to fill out the questionnaire were not under 12 as the age limit for our film is 12. From the results, around half of the people who we asked were in the range of 16-18 and then a quarter was 19-22. A small portion was 12-15. And then another small portion was over 22. I only got a few in these age ranges to answer, as it wasn’t our main target audience.
The second question i asked was 'what is your gender'. Most of the people taking the survey were male as this was our main target audience that is going to watch our film. I got females views to see if they also could watch the rest of the film and get out tertiary audience view. Around two thirds of the people answering were male.

This is the third question I asked. It asked 'do you enjoy watching sport films'. Half of the audience said yes they do enjoy watching sport films. This is important, as our film is a sport/drama. If people enjoy watching these types of films already then they will be able to enjoy out film. Just under a quarter said they were unsure if they liked sport films. Just over a quarter said no. This wasn't too bad as they could enjoy the drama that is involved in the film as well.

This is the fourth question is asked. It asked 'would you recommend this film?'. Two thirds of people said they would. This means some of our secondary audience and tertiary audience said they would still recommend this film to other people. This means it can reach a wider range that we first thought. More people will be able to enjoy watching the film
This is the sixth question i asked. It asked 'what genre would you say this film is?’ I asked this to see if the opening sequence got across the right genre we was going for. Just under half answered sport/drama. This is the genre we was going for as it is about football but also all the dramas include on George Cohen’s life. The other sections chosen were just sport and just drama. This is good to see as the right genre was portrayed in our opening sequence. There were no odd answers they were all picked along the right tracks of what we wanted it to be.

This is the seventh question on the survey. I asked 'would you watch the rest of the film', just over half said they would watch the rest. This meaning in the short time we had to grab the audience was achieved well. A quarter said they may watch the rest of the film and only a quarter said they wouldn't. Only seeing two minutes could of not been enough for some people to tell if they rest of the film will we good or will be what they want to watch. I asked if they would watch the rat of the film because it showed that people were hooked in the first few minutes and this is what the first section of a film is trying to do.

This is the eighth question I asked on the survey. It asked 'what did you like about the film', I asked this because it gave the person a chance to write what they wanted instead of choosing from multiple choice. The feedback was very mixed so we had a wide range of things in the opening sequence that people liked. Some people said they liked the flash back from the old character to his younger self. A few said that they liked the park scene as it was tense and hooked them straight away. More people said that they liked the black and white effect used in the changing room scene. Another said they liked the shots used. This was good to read as we planned out the shots well and made sure they were varied. Also the tense music used. They liked this because it set the scene well and the genre for the rest of the film. The rest of the compliments are in the photo.

This is the ninth question on the survey. I asked 'what could be improved based on what you have seen'. This question was asked to give people a chance to give their own feedback that we can take on and think about. Firstly few people said that the resolution and the quality of the camera in the park scene could be improved. It was the quality we wanted but this was based down to the equipment we had available. A few reviewers said that the story line was a bit confusing. This could be down to the change in time period and the flash back. Furthermore people said the titles could have been placed better in the shots to make them more clearer and look better. A couple of people said that the voice over could have been made clearer and better quality. Maybe they thought the sound of the voice didn't fit with the mood of the film. Some of the costumes could have been improved. The reviews said the boots could be made to look older as you can still see the brand and the type of boot through the black and white effect. The rest of the reviews are on the photo.
This is the final question on the survey. It asked 'what would you rate this film out of 10'. I asked this question because it would give us an overview of how good our film was and too see if people enjoyed this short clip enough the give it a good rating. The lowest rating we got was 5. This means even the people that weren't that into sport or drama films till enjoyed watching the opening sequence. 10 out of the 18 replies were over 8 rated. We are happy to see this as it shows that the film we had created was liked by many people. Even with our secondary and tertiary audience answering the survey didn't give the opening sequence and dramatically low rating. We were only given one 10 but this isn't bad as we could of gone back and improved the opening sequence. We know it was not perfect and could of improved based on these reviews in the future.
To address our audience we did a screening of our show to the people we were aiming our film at. We then told these people to complete our survey on survey monkey. We mostly got people of our target audience but there were some other people as well. The other people said that the film didn't appeal to them, this helped to prove that our film opening was successful at addressing our target audience.
In order to attract our audience we used social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in order to spark interest for our film. Most people find films on the internet so that is where we targeted. We also developed a website for our film so that when people found our online advertisements they could directly go to our website and find out more information about the film. We also wanted to put posters around football stadiums in order to address our target audience successfully as this is where our target audience would be.

This is the fifth question on the survey. I asked 'what genre of film do you typically watch?’ A quarter of people said comedy meaning that they may not like the seriousness of our film. This is only a typical film they would watch so most people would happily watching more than one genre. The second highest was Sci-Fi. The rest of the option got one or two picks each so a vast spread of the different genre our audience watches.
This is the sixth question i asked. It asked 'what genre would you say this film is?’ I asked this to see if the opening sequence got across the right genre we was going for. Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of contracting this product?
Below is a Podcast we made evaluating the question "What have you learnt about technologies from the process of contracting this product?" using Garage band, Imovie and Premiere Pro. I found problems with the Imove software as it chopped the ending off of our podcast. The ending should have gone on to say...
Oliver- "We used premiere After Effects in the second half of our film opening to make it look like it was old footage. This was effective and seemed to make our film look older."
Presenter- "Thank you for coming in today"

Question 7: Looking back at your Preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?
Below is a video log evaluating the question "looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to your full product? The two films are displayed below the Vlog video,
Representation
Below us a post about to group and people we are representing though our film opening.
Throughout our film we are going to be representing different people. A key group of people we will be representing is people over the age of 65 (the elderly). However, we not be getting our character to walk with a stick or limp or appear to be worse of, it will be evident that we are representing them just through the use of actors. Our actor plays an old aged George Cohen a footballing star.
Institution
Below is information about the Production companies we have chosen to fund our film and why.
We decided to use the production company milkshake films who are associated with lots of independent football films such as the Goal film series. Milkshake films is a small English company. This is why we thought they would be good for our small budget football film. We also used our own company 'Lingo Films'. The problem we faced with having only 'Milkshake Films' as our actual production company is that the films it has previously done have had much bigger production companies working along side it meaning the budget for our film would be quite small. This isn't realistic as to film the whole of our film we would have to hire our a stadium and there would be other expensive elements. Therefore we should have probably looked at Universal or other companies which have worked with 'Milkshake Films' previously.

Teacher Feedback.
Teacher |
Below is the teacher feedback we got from the viewing of our first cut of our film opening.
The other teacher said the start was very good and it set the scene. They wasn't sure on the font of our titles so we searched for better ones that fitted the genre more. The transition from old to new wasn't clear so we needed to fit the change in better so it was clearer for the viewers as to which one he was. Also the story line wasn't clear for the rest of the film. Making the transition better made it clearer.
One teacher said that our shots were very well and gentle. This worked well with the genre of the film. Also worms eye view shots of the boots looked really good. It would be even better if the titles were further apart and not as close to the edge of the screen. Also if we included dietetic sound in the changing room of football boots and people talking in the background. Also we had a wobbly at the end which we sorted out and was still.
Film Poster
This is our film poster for our film 'Cohen' and a bit of information about it.
This is the poster for our film it will be put in bus stops in Cinemas and in places around football stadiums as this is where our target audience will see it, it will also be put online. It also has the same number and name of the person we are basing it on. This is also our film title. We added a short quote to make people want to look into the poster and want to go see the film. Across the top are some of the actors in the film opening.

Marketing

In this post i will be talking about how we would market our film to reach our target audience

Shot List
This post talks about the shots we are going to use for our film opening.
Extreme long shot of park, pan to the right at a normal level. This is the first establishing shot of our film opening.
Worms eye view of the bottom of characters legs. It is a handheld shot, walking forward and it tilts up the character staying the same angle. As the character walks away he becomes a long shot with his whole body in the shot.
The third shot is a long shot into mid shot of the old man in walking through the park as he comes closer to the camera.
It goes to a close up of a football to show what triggers his memory. It is the symbol of his whole career.
It goes to a long shot of the old man to a medium step as he takes 2 steps forward towards the ball. It shows the thing he has looked at and what has triggered his memory.
First in the changing room we will have the younger version of the character in the opening scene showing that that is him. It will go from and close up to a medium shot of the players.
We will have a tracking shot in the changing room showing the players getting ready.
We have a tilting shot showing the changing room and up the players. This will set the new scene and get all the charters into play.
There will be a shot of a couple of shirts hung up on the hangers. This will last for 2-4 seconds. it will be at an angle to the wall and pan slowing revealing more shirts.
We will have a worms eye view of people doing up boots and putting them on. This will track across a few people also showing shin pads and socks.
Close up of back of shirt. Will have the same number as the person we are basing the film on.

Script
In this post it will talk about the script we used for the voice over in the third scene of Cohen's opening.
We decided to add some narration to the end of our film opening to add some context to the opening. We did a short narration from the perspective of a young football fanatic.
"On the 30th July 1966,
96,924 went and watched England win the world cup,
a day my nation stood strong.
But the road to Wembley started way before 1966
for a young George Cohen."
Evaluation of Storyboard
This is an evaluation of our story board.
Our story board is extremely simple which is a bit of a problem. We designed it more to get ideas down into an order which isn't very specific. We didn't say how long the shots were going to be and we did't have a clear plan for our second scene. This was a problem when it came to our filming as it meant our film ended up being 30 seconds too short which was why we added an extra scene on the end. Below is the walk through of our story board. From the video you can see the lack of precision we had when planning our shots. We made other plans when doing individual shots.
The good things about my blog is that the pictures correlate well with the actual setting of our film opening, like in the changing room. Some of the blocks also gave us information out what should happen in the shot and some specific details which we though were important to the scene, for example the zooming into the face shot which we used to make a transition from the old Cohen to the young one.
Overall, our storyboard was good as it led us in the right direction and got our idea's flowing but it wasn't specific enough in the long run as it lacked timings.
